Working with students from Christ's school during my residency in South London, 'Stork' was a very successful project and was sited at the entrance to the school. We started looking at homophones, words that sound the same but have different meanings and after a number of ideas we decided to make the stalk/stork combination into a sculpture. The school was interested in using as many techniques as possible and we worked with copper, wood, steel, and aluminium. We also used the sand casting process to make aluminium cat heads and powder coating paint techniques to paint the cat bodies.
The cats were made by making a positive head in glazed ceramic that the students could then keep and then sandcasting that to make the aluminium finished piece. These were attached to the sheet steel bodies.
